Jan Behrmann

Jan Behrmann is a Full Professor in Marine Geodynamics at the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel and the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR), where he has been affiliated since 2006. Previously, he served as Full Professor in Geology at Freiburg University from 1995 to 2006. His research is centered at the intersection of tectonics, marine geology, and geodynamics, with a focus on subduction zones, accretionary prisms, and active tectonic processes.

His research interests include structural geology, petrophysics, rock deformation, fluid flow in sediments, and the geomechanical properties of marine sediments and hard rocks. He has led and participated in numerous international ocean drilling expeditions, including IODP Expeditions 308 and 315, and ODP Legs 110, 141, and others, conducting shore-based structural studies and 3D retrodeformation analyses across regions such as Chile, the Gulf of Mexico, the Alps, and the North Sea.

Throughout his career, Prof. Behrmann has secured significant research funding from German agencies including the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) and BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research), leading projects such as FastSed, DFG-SFB 574 'Subduction Factory', and PetroTec, focusing on sediment strength, tectonics, fluid flow, and slope stability in subduction zones. He has also advanced neutron diffraction techniques for rock texture analysis at the IBR-2 reactor in Dubna, Russia.

He has played leadership roles as co-chief scientist on major expeditions and contributed to understanding seismogenic zones, neotectonics in Patagonia, and the Upper Rhine Graben. His work integrates field, laboratory, and computational methods to investigate the dynamics of the ocean floor and continental margins.
