Jamil Zaki is a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, leading the Stanford Social Neuroscience Laboratory. His work focuses on empathy, social cognition, and emotion regulation, with particular attention to how these processes shape interpersonal relationships, political attitudes, and mental health. He holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Columbia University (2010).
Research interests include the neural mechanisms of empathy, the role of empathy in prosocial behavior, and interventions to enhance empathy in diverse contexts such as criminal justice reform and political polarization. His recent work explores how social connections influence well-being and how empathy can mitigate partisan animosity.
Zaki has pioneered interventions using virtual reality and media to build empathy, demonstrated the impact of social norms on food choices, and examined how beliefs about emotion duration affect decision-making. His research integrates social psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral economics, with implications for education, healthcare, and policy.
Key contributions include studies on the neuroscience of prosociality, the cognitive underpinnings of empathy deficits, and the societal consequences of cynicism. His lab employs fMRI, EEG, and behavioral experiments to investigate how people perceive and respond to others' emotions.
Zaki has been awarded grants including a National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2015) for studying empathy-building processes. His work has been featured in The New York Times, TED Talks, and his book *The War for Kindness: Building Empathy in a Fractured World* (2019) synthesizes his research into practical strategies for fostering compassion.
