Dr. Jamie Shinn is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF). Their research focuses on climate adaptation, environmental governance, and disaster response, particularly in contexts of social-ecological vulnerability. Shinn holds a PhD in Geography from Penn State University, an MA from the University of Kansas, and a BA from Colorado College. Their work integrates mixed methods, emphasizing qualitative approaches to study flooding impacts in Central Appalachia and Southern Africa.
Key research initiatives include the NSF-funded West Virginia Flood Resilience Framework, exploring community-driven disaster recovery, and collaborations on energy justice and climate finance. Shinn teaches courses on environmental policy, water-climate-society dynamics, and qualitative methods. They have received over $1M in grants, including a 2012 Fulbright grant for Botswana research.
Shinn advises four graduate students on topics ranging from human-wildlife coexistence to climate adaptation.
