Jean Kayira is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Studies at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF). Their research focuses on Indigenous knowledge systems, food sovereignty, decolonizing methodologies, and climate change education. They hold a Ph.D. in Environment and Sustainability from the University of Saskatchewan (2013), an M.A. in Environmental Science & Policy from Clark University (2004), and a B.Ed. in Science from the University of Malawi (1991).
Key research interests include community-based research, youth participatory action research, and culturally responsive evaluation. They have published extensively on topics like land-based heritage, environmental policy governance, and decolonizing educational practices. Recent studies include analyses of forest bathing’s impact on adolescent well-being and comparative studies of FLEGT voluntary partnership agreements in African nations.
As a mentor, Kayira advises multiple graduate students in Environmental Science, emphasizing participatory and equity-focused methodologies. They serve on professional committees including the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). Their work bridges environmental science, education, and social justice, contributing to global sustainability discourses.
