Dr. Jamie McPhie is an Associate Professor in Environmental Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Cumbria, serving as Course Leader for the MA Outdoor and Experiential Learning program. He holds a PhD in Environmental Humanities and Social Science and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. His research explores intersections of mental health, ecology, and pedagogy through creative and post-qualitative methodologies. He has received awards including the 2018 University of Cumbria Lecturer of the Year and the 2011 University of Brighton Excellence in Facilitating Learning award.
Academic Background: PhD (2017) from the University of Cumbria, PGCE in Post-Compulsory Education, First Class Honours in Adventure Education, and certifications in outdoor leadership. Affiliations include the Institute of Outdoor Learning (IOL), Environmental and Sustainability Education Research (ESER), and the Nature Connections Research Network (NCRN).
Research Interests: Mental health distribution in environments, posthuman inquiry, therapeutic landscapes, ecofascism critiques, and arts-based methodologies. Key themes include process-relational philosophies, feminist new materialisms, and psychogeography.
Supervision: Current PhD students include Harriet Fraser (environmental agency in protected landscapes) and Christophe Place (monetary systems). Completed supervision includes Sonia Hutchison (reflective practice) and Mark Christie (green exercise outcomes).
External Roles: External Examiner for Canterbury Christ Church University (2019–2023), PhD Opponent at the University of Oulu (2023), and advisor for course validations in outdoor leadership programs.
Labs/Teams: Active member of the Environmental and Sustainability Education Research (ESER) network, the Institute of Outdoor Learning (IOL), and collaborator in the University of Cumbria’s Environmental Humanities initiatives.
