James Dreier is the Judy C. Lewent and Mark L. Shapiro Professor of Philosophy at Brown University. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from Princeton University (1988) and an AB in Government from Harvard University (1982). His primary research focuses on metaethics, moral theory, and decision theory, with specific interests in expressivism, practical reason, and rationality. He has held visiting positions at Monash University (1993-94) and the Australian National University (2003 as John Harsanyi Fellow).
His work addresses topics such as moral relativism, the supervenience of moral properties, and the integration of decision theory with ethical frameworks. Notable contributions include critiques of quasi-realism and explorations of agent-centered value structures. Dreier has published extensively in top journals like Philosophical Studies, Analytic Philosophy, and Res Philosophica.
