Caj Sixten Strandberg is a Professor of Practical Philosophy at the University of Oslo's Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas (IFIKK). He holds a PhD in Philosophy from Lund University and has previously been affiliated with Lund University and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. His academic focus is on metaethics, with notable contributions to moral realism, motivational internalism, and the interplay between moral language and attitudes.
Strandberg's research explores themes such as normative reasons for action, rationality, and the connection between ethical and aesthetic value judgments. His work includes defending a naturalist yet non-reductionist version of moral realism in his dissertation Moral Reality. A Defence of Moral Realism (2004). He has also examined the pragmatic dimensions of moral motivation and the structural differences between aesthetic and ethical value judgments.
His publications span prestigious journals like The Journal of Ethics, Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, and The British Journal of Aesthetics. He has edited volumes on motivational internalism and contributed entries to major encyclopedias such as the International Encyclopedia of Ethics. Strandberg's teaching covers metaethics, normative ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of religion.
Recent work includes exploring neo-Humean rationality frameworks, the objectivity of moral judgments, and ecumenical theories of moral reasons. His research consistently bridges theoretical metaethics with practical philosophical inquiry.
