Dr. Jamie Bernard is an Associate Professor and Director of the Ph.D. Program in Pharmacology & Toxicology at Michigan State University (MSU), affiliated with the College of Human Medicine. Her research focuses on mechanisms linking environmental exposures, obesity, and carcinogenesis, particularly the role of adipose tissue-derived factors like FGF2 in promoting cancer. She leads the Bernard Lab, which explores chemopreventive agents and inflammatory pathways in obesity-associated malignancies.
Dr. Bernard holds a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology. Her work spans drug discovery, immune modulation, and translational biomarker development. She teaches courses including PHM 828 Concepts in Carcinogenesis and PHM 802 Pharmacology.
Her research highlights include identifying FGF2's role in adiposity-driven breast cancer, UV radiation's effects on immune signaling, and developing high-throughput assays for chemoprevention screening. She collaborates with MSU's Integrated Pharmacological Sciences and Environmental Toxicology programs.
Dr. Bernard advises three graduate students and has published extensively in Nature Medicine, Oncogene, and Journal of Investigative Dermatology. Her lab's work aims to translate mechanistic findings into clinical applications for cancer prevention and treatment.
