Jamie Barwick is a Senior Lecturer in Precision Agriculture at the University of New England's School of Environmental and Rural Science, where he leads livestock-focused research for the Precision Agriculture Research Group (PARG). His work centers on deploying sensor technologies (accelerometers, GNSS, IMUs) to monitor livestock behavior and health in extensive grazing systems.
Barwick completed his Ph.D. at UNE in 2017, developing on-animal motion sensors for autonomous detection of sheep behavior. His current projects include implantable identification systems, supplement intake monitoring in cattle using RFID, and alpaca guardian behavior analysis. He coordinates industry collaborations addressing livestock theft reduction and disease management (e.g., liver fluke epidemiology).
He teaches Precision Agriculture, Grazing Systems, and Animal Production courses, and has received multiple teaching commendations. Barwick serves on the committee of the Society of Precision Agriculture Australia and maintains memberships in ISPA and SPAA. His research has been recognized through awards including the Australian Government Science and Innovation Award (2017) and SABL Deans Award for Research Excellence (2018).
