James Winters is an Instructor in Applied Jazz and Improvisation at the University of Maine's School of Performing Arts. He has held an adjunct role with the Bangor Symphony for 20 years and currently collaborates with Colby College’s jazz and classical groups. His performance career spans tenor trombone in jazz, pop, orchestral settings, and stage bands, including cruise lines and television shows. Winters holds degrees in intermedial art, humanities, and laboratory science from the University of Maine, alongside a Master’s in art with experimental composition. He is pursuing a PhD in intermedia arts, researching the mystical dimensions of jazz under Dr. Jay Bregman, focusing on Sun Ra’s historical space-jazz. He is also a student member of UMaine’s Graduate Medical Arts Program.
