James Watson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at Oregon State University (OSU), affiliated with the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS). His research focuses on complex adaptive systems, social-ecological interactions, and environmental science. He holds a master’s degree from the National Oceanography Centre (Southampton, UK) and a PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara, followed by postdoctoral work at Princeton University and the Stockholm Resilience Centre.
- Education:
- MSc Oceanography, Southampton Oceanography Centre (now National Oceanography Centre), UK
- PhD in Geography, University of California, Santa Barbara
- Postdoctoral Research: Princeton University (Simon Levin), Stockholm Resilience Centre
His work bridges oceanography, economics, and computer science to address socio-environmental challenges. Key research areas include:
- Climate adaptation in fisheries
- Cooperative insurance mechanisms
- Conflict dynamics in resource management
- Resilience of coastal systems
- Machine learning for ecosystem forecasting
Recent projects include founding BigFish, Inc., to develop insurance programs for fisheries and aquaculture, and establishing the Socio-Environmental Analysis (SEA) Lab at OSU. Watson emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and translating science into actionable solutions for sustainability.
He mentors PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, emphasizing creativity and leadership. His lab fosters partnerships with NGOs and governments to tackle real-world environmental challenges.
Notable contributions include modeling human behavior in fisheries, predicting climate-related conflicts, and exploring systemic risks in transboundary resource systems. Watson advocates for policy reforms in Earth sciences and aims to establish a complex adaptive systems institute at OSU.
