He leads the Conflict Ecology lab, focusing on satellite remote sensing and geospatial analysis to study climate vulnerability, land use change, and conflict dynamics. His work integrates environmental science with humanitarian challenges, emphasizing policy applications for disaster risk reduction and sustainable development.
Education:
- Ph.D. (2012), Geography, University of Wisconsin-Madison
- M.Sc. (2005), Civil and Environmental Engineering, UW-Madison
- B.Sc./B.A. (2004), Civil Engineering & Classical Humanities with Archaeology, UW-Madison
Research Interests: Van Den Hoek specializes in analyzing humanitarian crises through geospatial technologies. His lab explores:
- Satellite imagery for conflict zone monitoring
- Refugee settlement dynamics and environmental impacts
- Climate change adaptation in displacement contexts
- Policy applications linking environmental data to humanitarian action.
Grants & Awards: Over $1.7M in direct grants, including NASA Rapid Response projects on Tigray displacement monitoring. Notable awards include the NASA Postdoctoral Fellowship and Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery Award.
