James Wasley is a Professor in the Department of Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and an Affiliate Professor at the School of Freshwater Sciences. He serves as the director of the Institute for Ecological Design and previously chaired the Department of Architecture. His roles include past-president of the Society of Building Science Educators and the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance. He holds an M.Arch from Rice University (1992) and a B.Arch/Honors from the University of Oregon (1983).
Wasley’s research focuses on ecological urban waterscapes, green architecture, and carbon-neutral design. His projects include stormwater management initiatives on the UWM campus since 2005 and the Milwaukee Inner Harbor Project (2011–present), which explores brownfield redevelopment and ecological restoration. His teaching emphasizes design studios and professional practice through an ecological lens.
Key research areas include sustainable building practices, environmental ratings systems, architectural daylighting, and ‘extreme case’ healthy environments. His work integrates ecological principles with urban planning and architectural innovation, addressing challenges such as climate resilience and indoor environmental quality.
Wasley has led interdisciplinary initiatives, including demonstration projects at the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences and collaborations with regional organizations. His contributions span academic leadership, professional advocacy, and applied research in sustainable design.
