James W Dottin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Brown University. His research focuses on sulfur isotope variations in Ocean Island Basalts, Martian meteorites, lunar materials, and pallasite meteorites to understand volatile cycling and planetary evolution. He leads the SLAB (Sulfur Isotope Laboratory at Brown), which investigates Earth, Moon, Mars, and beyond.

Research Interests: James explores sulfur dynamics across planetary bodies, including the Moon’s interior-surface-atmosphere interactions, sulfur sources in Ocean Island Basalts linked to Earth’s deep mantle, Martian sulfur evolution, and nebular chemistry’s role in pre-biotic molecule formation. His lab, SLAB, is equipped with advanced instrumentation like the Thermo MAT253+ mass spectrometer.
Teaching: Teaches EEPS 2910Y, a course on the Moon’s origin and evolution through a geochemical lens.
Labs/Teams: Directs the SLAB laboratory, which emphasizes collaborative projects on planetary geochemistry. Open to graduate students and postdocs via Brown’s Deep Carbon Observatory program or fellowships like NSF-EAR and LunaSCOPE.
