James Voogt is a Full Professor in the Department of Geography within the Faculty of Social Science at Western University. His research focuses on urban climatology, specializing in the measurement and modeling of urban surface temperatures using remote sensing technologies. He serves as an editorial board member for Remote Sensing of Environment and is affiliated with Western Space as an investigator.
Dr. Voogt specializes in urban climatology with particular expertise in thermal remote sensing of urban areas. His research examines urban surface temperatures from ground, airborne, and space-borne platforms to understand three-dimensional urban temperature patterns, thermal anisotropy, and heat impacts on urban residents. He investigates methods of climate measurements in urban areas, especially traverse methodologies for gathering climate data, and applies remote sensing data for urban climate model evaluation. His work addresses spatial variations in heat impacts on urban residents and contributes to urban climate adaptation strategies.
Dr. Voogt's recent publications (2017-2021) demonstrate a strong focus on urban heat island phenomena, thermal remote sensing applications, and urban climate modeling. His research spans multiple spatial scales from microscale street canyons to city-wide analyses across 50 global cities. Key themes include urban surface temperature dynamics, thermal anisotropy modeling, urban cooling strategies, and the health impacts of urban heat. His work combines surface and boundary layer meteorology with remote sensing and GIS technologies to advance understanding of urban thermal environments.
