James Verdon

Prof James Verdon is the Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Media, Film and Education at Swinburne University of Technology. He holds the academic rank of Professor and has served as Chair of the Department of Film and Animation from 2014–2019. His research focuses on the interplay between reality and screen-based representations, emphasizing technological mediation in media. He has exhibited internationally, including at venues like Leicester Square (London), ACMI (Melbourne), and the Bangkok International Film Festival. Prof Verdon has secured funding from organizations such as the Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian Film Commission, and the Goethe-Institut.

His professional activities include committee memberships in the Australian Screen Production Education and Research Association (President, 2016–2019; Vice President, 2015–2016), the AHRC Filmmaking Research Network Steering Committee (2016–2018), and the Australasian Council of Deans of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (DASSH). He has also undertaken visiting roles at Chulalongkorn University, Ling Tung University, and New York University.

Prof Verdon has supervised multiple doctoral candidates, including research on topics such as mobile storytelling, audio-visual synchronization, and Taiwanese calligraphers. His recent grants include 'Screen Cultures and Screen Industries Ecosystems' (Swinburne, 2024–2025) and the 'Industry in Residence Program and Charles Herschell Fellowship Agreement' (2015–2023).
