James Vercammen is a Professor of Food and Resource Economics at the University of British Columbia (UBC), jointly appointed with the Sauder School of Business and the Faculty of Land and Food Systems. His academic background includes a PhD in Agriculture and Resource Economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. His research focuses on agricultural commodity prices, environmental policy, and the application of machine learning to agri-energy systems. Notable areas include analyzing the link between energy and food prices, evaluating Canada’s carbon tax impacts, and studying agri-environmental policies.
He teaches graduate courses in strategic economic analysis of agri-food markets and has supervised projects such as forecasting food price inflation and spatial analysis of food access in BC. Vercammen has held editorial roles at the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics and the American Journal of Agricultural Economics.
