James Vandenberg serves as a University assistant predoctoral at the Department of Geography and Regional Research, Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy, University of Vienna. His work centers on urban sustainability transformations through interdisciplinary research.
His academic background includes:
- BA in International Relations and Development (University of British Columbia), featuring study at University of Amsterdam and an internship with Gender Concerns International in The Hague
- 4Cities Joint Erasmus Mundus MSc in Urban Studies across Brussels, Vienna, Copenhagen, and Madrid
Vandenberg's research employs complex adaptive systems theory to analyze urban food system resilience, investigating community gardens, vertical farms, circular metabolism, and emerging technologies (AI, blockchain, renewable energy). He examines socio-ecological-political-economic-technical interactions to address food security for 10 billion people by 2050 under climate change pressures, emphasizing equitable sustainability transformations.
