James Van Orman serves as Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at Case Western Reserve University, where he has held continuous faculty appointments since 2002, progressing from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor and ultimately to Professor in 2012. His research integrates experimental and modeling methodologies to investigate planetary interior dynamics.
Educational background includes a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2000) and B.S. from Florida State University (1994).
Research spans planetary evolution with emphasis on:
- Volatiles in lunar formation and evolution
- Chemical evolution of planetary cores
- Isotope fractionation in magmatic systems
- Diffusion properties in mantle/core/crustal minerals
- Earth's core-mantle boundary chemical processes
- Early solar system planet-building chronology
Professor Van Orman actively seeks graduate and undergraduate researchers for planetary evolution studies and encourages prospective students to contact him directly via email.
