James Uden is a Professor of Classical Studies at Boston University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of World Languages & Literatures. His research focuses on Latin literature (especially poetry), the Gothic, medicine and humanities, and travel writing. He holds a Ph.D. in Classics from Columbia University (2011), an M.A. in Classics from Columbia (2008), and degrees from the University of Sydney (LL.B. Honors and B.A. with University Medal and Honors, 2005/2003).
He has authored two major books: The Invisible Satirist: Juvenal and Second-Century Rome (2015) and Spectres of Antiquity: Classical Literature and the Gothic, 1740-1830 (2020), the latter winning the Charles J. Goodwin Award of Merit. His current projects explore Heroic Vulnerability in Roman epic and Medicine and Literature in Ancient Rome, funded by a Mellon Foundation grant.
Uden teaches courses on Roman cultural history, Latin language/literature, and the Core Curriculum. He won the Gitner Teaching Award (2016) and delivered public lectures on ancient Rome's daily life and literature. His research integrates classical and Gothic studies, emphasizing cross-cultural interactions and interdisciplinary approaches to ancient texts.
