Dennis P. Kehoe is a Professor of Classical Studies at Tulane University, serving since 1982 and holding the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in the Humanities title (2010–2013). He specializes in Roman social and economic history, law, and papyrology, with interdisciplinary research on legal institutions' economic roles. His work bridges ancient law and modern economic theory, co-editing Roman Law and Economics (2020).
Education: BA in Classics and German (Dartmouth, 1977), AB in Literae Humaniores (Oxford, 1979), PhD in Classical Studies (University of Michigan, 1982).
Research focuses on Roman legal frameworks influencing economic activity, including property management, contractual agency, and land use strategies. Awards include the Oliver Award for Faculty Mentoring (2019) and the Distinguished Newcomb Fellow (2015).
He has held leadership roles: Department Chair thrice, Acting Director of Jewish Studies, and committee chairs across Tulane’s governance. Courses taught include Law and Society in Ancient Rome, Roman Legal History, and advanced Latin literature.
