Catherine Keane is a Professor of Classics and Affiliate Professor of Comparative Literature at Washington University in St. Louis, serving as Director of Graduate Studies. She holds a PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and previously taught at Reed College and Northwestern University. Her research focuses on Latin literature, Roman satire (especially Juvenal and Martial), and ancient literary criticism, with a current major project on a commentary of Juvenal’s fifth book of Satires.
Keane’s work examines the emotional dimensions of satire, exploring how satirists like Juvenal engage with moral, social, and literary themes. Her publications include Juvenal and the Satiric Emotions (2015), A Roman Verse Satire Reader (2010), and Figuring Genre in Roman Satire (2006). She has held fellowships from the Mellon Foundation, Loeb Classical Library, and others.
Her teaching includes courses like Greek Mythology (L08 Classics 301C), emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to ancient narratives and their cultural resonance. Awards and recognitions include election to leadership roles in the Society for Classical Studies.
