Dr. James Thompson is an Assistant Dean for Student Experience and Lecturer in Teaching and Learning at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Design (MSD). He leads the Built Environments Learning and Teaching (BEL+T) group, focusing on enhancing teaching and learning across built environments disciplines. With a PhD from the University of Washington and a Master of Architecture from the University of Minnesota, his research explores architectural education, student identity formation, and pedagogical innovation. Previously at the University of Portsmouth, he directed the Pedagogical Research Group and was awarded UK Higher Education Academy Fellowship.
His work prioritizes student-centered approaches, including peer assessment, hybrid learning, and virtual site visits. Key outputs include the 2019 book Narratives of Architectural Education and a 2017 award-winning article on pre-disciplinary education. He currently serves as Assistant Editor for the International Journal of Education in Architecture and Design and guest-edited a 2020 Charrette journal issue on student-centric design education.
Research focuses span architectural pedagogy, utopian theory, and wellbeing in education. His recent studies address post-pandemic learning environments, employability skills, and teamwork dynamics. Thompson’s contributions highlight transformative educational practices in architecture and built environments disciplines.
