James Sweeney is an Emeritus Professor at Arizona State University (ASU) and currently serves as a bioengineering professor and special assistant to the dean of engineering at Oregon State University (OSU). At OSU, he holds the James and Shirley Kuse Endowed Chair in Chemical Engineering and previously led the School of Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering (2014–2018). He has held academic leadership roles including department chair at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) and interim dean of FGCU’s engineering college. Sweeney completed his Ph.D. (1988) and M.S. (1983) in Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, and a Sc.B. in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University (1979).
His research focuses on neural engineering, biomedical devices, and cardiac assist systems, with contributions to functional electrical stimulation and skeletal muscle ventricle design. He has led over 20 interdisciplinary grants from NIH, NSF, and industry partners, emphasizing neural interfaces, tissue engineering, and biomedical innovation. Sweeney has presented widely on bioengineering education and neural prosthetics, and actively participates in ABET accreditation reviews for engineering programs.
Professional service includes roles as faculty senate executive committee member at ASU and advisor for student biomedical engineering chapters. His work bridges engineering and medicine, with ongoing emphasis on strategic initiatives in academic leadership and translational research.
