Dr. Derek Lura is a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, Civil Engineering, and Environmental Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), affiliated with the U.A. Whitaker College of Engineering. He joined FGCU in 2013 and focuses on biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering, prosthetics, and robotics. His research aims to enhance mobility and manipulability for individuals with disabilities through innovative device design and robotic methods.
He holds a PhD, MS, and BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of South Florida. Prior to FGCU, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of South Florida’s Center for Assistive, Rehabilitation, and Robotics Technologies, where he coordinated research at the Rehabilitation Robotics and Prosthetics Testbed.
Research Interests: Biomechanics, prosthetic device functional evaluation, mobility enhancement technologies, robotics for human motion modeling, and undergraduate research engagement. He emphasizes hands-on learning for students to contribute to both academic and community impacts.
His work spans clinical trials evaluating prosthetic designs, sensor development for prosthetic comfort, and interdisciplinary projects like agrivoltaic systems. He actively publishes on prosthetic biomechanics, adaptive devices, and educational strategies.
Professional Contributions: Member of the Biomedical Engineering Society, American Academy of Orthotist & Prosthetist, and American Society for Engineering Education. His research integrates engineering principles with clinical needs, aiming to improve quality of life for disabled populations.
