معرفی
Dr. James S. Kellam is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at Saint Vincent College. His academic career has evolved to encompass dual focuses in Ornithology and Exercise Physiology, reflecting his transition from wildlife biology to human biology pedagogy. He has spearheaded research in avian sensory perception, habitat modeling, and population dynamics, while expanding course offerings into exercise science. His work involves student training and public outreach through bird walks, YouTube content, and blog writing. He holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Purdue University (2003) and a B.A. in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic (1996).
Education:
- Ph.D. Biological Sciences, Purdue University, 2003
- B.A. Human Ecology, College of the Atlantic, 1996
Research Interests: Dr. Kellam explores sensory perception in Downy Woodpeckers, habitat suitability modeling for Red-bellied Woodpeckers in Pennsylvania, and avian population shifts due to environmental changes. His recent work integrates ornithology with exercise physiology, supported by significant donations to his program in 2017 and 2021. He has developed new courses like Biology of Birds and World Series of Birds, while maintaining a commitment to conservation biology and wildlife education.
Publications & Outreach: His peer-reviewed articles focus on woodpecker behavior, endocrinology, and environmental impacts. He contributes to Pennsylvania Birds and reviews ornithological literature. Beyond academia, he completed three Ironman Triathlons (2016, 2018, 2021), blending personal fitness with research interests in exercise physiology.
Leadership Roles: He served as Faculty Council President (2017-2021), guiding institutional transitions through leadership changes, curriculum reforms, and pandemic responses. His community involvement includes church leadership as an ordained Ruling Elder and singing in the choir.
Labs/Teams: His ornithology research program trains students in fieldwork, data analysis, and outreach, supported by institutional grants. He collaborates with local and national organizations to promote avian conservation and public education.
