Jim Armacost is an Associate Professor of Biology and Director of Environmental Science at Lamar University. He holds a Ph.D. in Biology from Illinois State University (2007), an M.S. in Biology from Mississippi State University (1998), and a B.S. in Zoology from Louisiana State University (1993). His research focuses on avian ecology, conservation biology, and habitat use patterns of birds across diverse ecosystems. He has conducted fieldwork in the U.S., Peru, and Japan.
His research interests include understanding how birds utilize habitats, the impacts of human-driven habitat changes, and biodiversity conservation strategies. He teaches courses such as Environmental Science, Anatomy & Physiology, and Ornithology. His publications explore topics like avian disease prevalence, invasive species effects, and tropical forest bird communities.
Armacost’s work bridges field observations with applied conservation, emphasizing the importance of habitat management for wildlife. He has contributed to studies on Amazonian river-island bird species and the ecological role of fallow farmlands in Japan.
