Dr. James Robert Fergusson is a Lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge since 2015. He currently serves as Course Director for the MPhil in Data Intensive Science and Director of the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Data Intensive Science, roles he has held since 2022. Previously, he was Deputy Director of the CDT from 2017 to 2022. His research focuses on primordial non-Gaussianity, CMB bispectrum analysis, and large-scale structure studies. Fergusson is a key figure in interdisciplinary initiatives like the Cambridge CDT in Data Intensive Science, which spans DAMTP, DPMMS, the Cavendish Laboratory, and the Institute of Astronomy. He also oversees the MPhil program, emphasizing statistical analysis, machine learning, and scientific computing.
Education: PhD in Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge (2005–2008), followed by a Research Associate role (2009–2014).
Research Interests:
- Primordial non-Gaussianity and its implications for inflationary models
- CMB and large-scale structure bispectrum analysis
- Interdisciplinary data science applications in cosmology
Publications highlight contributions to CMB constraints on inflation, non-Gaussianity forecasts, and advanced statistical techniques. His work bridges theoretical cosmology with cutting-edge data analysis methodologies.
Administrative and Collaborative Roles:
- Director of the CDT in Data Intensive Science
- Course Director for the MPhil in Data Intensive Science
- Member of DAMTP’s Relativity and Gravitation research group
Labs/Teams: Active in the DAMTP GR research group, focusing on gravitational physics and cosmological data analysis.
