Dr. James Railton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Sciences at Northumbria University, Faculty of Engineering and Environment. He holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield and a PGCE from Newcastle University, and has been actively contributing to research and teaching in sustainable chemistry and materials science since joining Northumbria University.
His educational background includes:

- PhD, Chemistry – University of Sheffield (awarded 3 Nov 2020), focusing on novel TiO2 and Nb2O5 supports for selective alkane oxidation

James Railton's research centers on surface chemistry, surface analysis, and sustainable innovation, particularly industrial waste valorisation and dematerialisation. His work integrates heterogeneous catalysis with green chemistry principles to develop functional materials from waste streams. He has led projects funded by TransFIRe and Northern Accelerator, with additional support from the TFI Network+ and Henry Royce Institute, focusing on surface functionalisation for sustainability applications.
His recent publications span diverse areas including polymer upcycling, food material modification under high pressure, and AI-optimized concrete systems.
