James Purkis is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Writing Studies at Western University, affiliated with University College. He holds a PhD (Shakespeare Institute, 2005), MPhil (University of Birmingham, 1996), PgDip (Shakespeare Institute, 1993), and BA (University of Birmingham, 1992). His research focuses on early modern dramatic manuscripts, editorial theory, and the intersection of authorship practices with social contexts.
Research Interests:
- Early modern manuscript drama and its social practices
- Shakespearean canon and textual studies
- Gender and desire in early modern writing
- Theoretical critiques of authorship
His current project, Shakespeare &C.: Manuscript, Collaboration, and Canon after Theory, explores how manuscript evidence reshapes understandings of authorship. Recent work includes a study of Thomas Heywood’s The Captives in MRDE.
