His research focuses on music pedagogy, particularly how instrumental/vocal teachers develop dialogic teaching skills through observation, peer discussion, and experience. He emphasizes enhancing student musical expression and independent thinking via dialogue-driven lessons. Findings aim to benefit teacher educators, practitioners, and resource providers.
James has presented at academic conferences and contributed to peer-reviewed publications. His work includes co-authored chapters on philosophical influences in teaching and teacher collaboration dynamics, both expected in a 2024 edited volume.
His research integrates practical teaching experience with academic inquiry, supported by grants from AHRC. He collaborates with trainee and practicing teachers to refine pedagogical strategies, reflecting on how dialogic methods can transform one-to-one and group instrumental lessons.
