Alexis Cairns is a Postgraduate Researcher at the University of York's School of Arts and Creative Technologies. She holds a BA (Hons) in Jazz Studies from Leeds College of Music (2006) and an MA in Music Education from the University of York (2020). Her research focuses on jazz improvisation pedagogy, particularly strategies for teaching beginners in one-to-one lessons. She has over 16 years of experience teaching woodwind instruments (saxophone, clarinet, flute) and performs professionally as a jazz saxophonist across Yorkshire, Manchester, and the North East.
Her work aims to equip instrumental teachers with effective methods for teaching jazz improvisation, especially those with limited jazz experience.
