James Phelan is a Distinguished University Professor of English and Director of Medical Humanities at The Ohio State University, where he has held dual roles as Director of Project Narrative. His academic career has been marked by groundbreaking contributions to narrative theory, rhetorical poetics, and the medical humanities. He serves as editor of the prestigious journal Narrative (ranked #1 in 'Literature and Writing') and co-edits the Ohio State University Press series The Theory and Interpretation of Narrative.
Phelan’s research focuses on narrative as rhetoric, exploring how authors construct fictional worlds through stylistic, ethical, and structural choices. His work includes over 10 authored/co-authored books and 175 essays, addressing topics such as character narration, narrative progression, and fictionality. Key publications include Narrative as Rhetoric (1996), Living to Tell about It (2005), and Somebody Telling Somebody Else (2017).
His awards include the Wayne C. Booth Lifetime Achievement Award (2021), membership in the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters (2016), and an honorary doctorate from Aarhus University (2013).
