Gerald J. Prince is a Professor of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Arts & Sciences. He specializes in modern French literature and narrative theory, with a focus on authors like Proust, Sartre, and contemporary writers such as Houellebecq. Prince has authored influential works including Narratology: The Form and Functioning of Narrative and A Dictionary of Narratology, and serves as General Editor of the 'Stages' series for the University of Nebraska Press. He is also on the editorial or advisory boards of over a dozen journals, including Narrative and Style.
His research interests include narrative poetics, the evolution of the novel, and themes in 20th-century French fiction. He currently teaches courses on narrative theory and modern French literature, and has directed doctoral dissertations on topics like the 'retour du romanesque' and Houellebecq's fiction. Prince received the Wayne C. Booth Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 for his contributions to narrative studies.
