James Newton is an actor, theatre maker, musician, and facilitator with over a decade of experience in devised theatre. He is a founding member of The Wardrobe Ensemble, contributing to productions such as WINNERS, The Last of the Pelican Daughters, and 1972: The Future of Sex, which have been showcased at venues like Royal & Derngate and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
His collaborative work extends to partnerships with theatre practitioners including Simon McBurney, Nigel and Louise, and mathematician Marcus du Sautoy. Notable teaching projects include the Oxford North Wall’s Arts Lab and the National Theatre’s Easter Space to Create, focusing on training young people aged 18-25 in intensive creative programs.
James has also contributed to adaptations like Maggot Moon at The Unicorn Theatre, highlighting his versatility across acting, devising, and educational facilitation. His research interests align with the practice and pedagogy of devised theatre, interdisciplinary collaborations between arts and sciences, and innovative performance creation methods.
