Dr. James Nelson is a Senior Lecturer at Queen's University Belfast, affiliated with the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work and the Senator George J Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. His research focuses on the role of religion in education and strategies for shared education in divided societies. He holds a PhD in Education from Queen's University (2013) and has been recognized with the John Coolahan Award (2023) for his work on non-religious teachers' experiences in religious schools.
His research interests include religious education curriculum design, teacher beliefs' impact on pedagogy, and peacebuilding through educational collaboration. He supervises PhD students in areas such as interfaith dialogue, peace education, and shared schooling models. Active in academic governance, he serves as a peer reviewer for journals like the British Journal of Religious Education and organizes professional development workshops.
Nelson collaborates with the Centre for Shared Education to study inter-school collaboration's role in fostering social cohesion. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to quality education and peacebuilding.
