James Myers is the Jan R. Williams Endowed Chair in Accounting Excellence at the University of Tennessee’s Haslam College of Business. He holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Accounting & Information Management. His teaching spans advanced financial accounting for undergraduates and a PhD-level capital markets seminar.
Dr. Myers earned his BSBA in Accounting from the University of Arizona (1989) and his PhD in Business Administration from the University of Michigan (1997). Prior to joining the University of Tennessee faculty, he served as the Ralph L. McQueen Professor of Accounting at the University of Arkansas.
His research focuses on firm valuation, analysts’ forecasts, earnings management, and auditing. Notable contributions include studies on auditor tenure impacts, earnings forecast accuracy, and equity valuation methodologies. His work has been published in top journals like The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Economics, and Journal of Finance.
Key awards include the 2014 Notable Contribution to Auditing Literature Award, 2009 AAA Best Paper Prize, and 2004 Financial Executives Research Foundation Award. He currently serves on editorial boards for Accounting Horizons, Contemporary Accounting Research, and The Accounting Review.
His research examines intersections between financial reporting, audit quality, and market behavior, with recent focus on machine learning applications in earnings prediction and retail investor dynamics in digital platforms like Robinhood.
