Dr. James Mungall is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University, affiliated with the Faculty of Science. His research focuses on igneous petrology, magmatic processes, and the genesis of magmatic ore deposits, particularly sulfide and oxide minerals in layered intrusions like the Stillwater Complex (Montana), Bushveld Complex (South Africa), and Sudbury Igneous Complex (Ontario). He employs fieldwork, experimental petrology, and numerical modeling to study magma dynamics, mineral crystallization, and ore-forming mechanisms.
Key interests include the physics and chemistry of magmas, platinum-group element (PGE) distribution, and the role of volatiles in sulfide segregation. His work integrates geochemical analyses, geochronology, and thermodynamic modeling to address questions about crust-mantle interactions and ore genesis. Current projects explore the geochemical evolution of layered intrusions, the impact of country rock assimilation on mineralization, and the environmental implications of large igneous provinces.
Recent studies highlight the importance of interfacial tension, vapor bubble dynamics, and redox conditions in controlling sulfide accumulation. Dr. Mungall collaborates on global field projects, including the Cape Smith Belt (Quebec), the Karoo Igneous Province (South Africa), and the Brazilian Goiás Magmatic Arc. He advises graduate students interested in quantitative models grounded in field observations and experimental data.
