Dr. James McGregor is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield. He holds a PhD in heterogeneous catalysis from the University of Cambridge and previously worked at the Fritz-Haber Institute in Berlin and the University of Cambridge as a University Lecturer before joining Sheffield in 2012.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng)
- Member of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (MIChemE)
- Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC)
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
His research focuses on sustainable catalytic engineering, particularly converting waste or low-value co-products into value-added chemicals and fuels. Key areas include carbon dioxide utilization, biomass conversion, and the role of carbonaceous materials in catalytic processes. He leads the Sustainable Catalytic Engineering research group and is an active member of the UK Catalysis Hub.
The 15 most recent publications highlight his work on CO2 methanation, biomass valorization, catalyst characterization techniques (THz spectroscopy, NMR, neutron scattering), and coke's dual role in catalysis. Articles span heterogeneous catalysis, electrocatalysis, and environmental applications.
