Dr. James Martone is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Science and Director of International Ophthalmology and Global Eye Health at the Yale School of Medicine. He is affiliated with the Yale Institute for Global Health and holds board certification in Ophthalmology. His career spans over 40 years, with extensive global experience in clinical and surgical ophthalmology, particularly in glaucoma and public health.
Education: MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1978), MPH in Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins (1988), with fellowships in Glaucoma (Duke University), Preventive Ophthalmology (Wilmer Eye Institute), and International Ophthalmology (Bethesda Eye Institute and Baylor University).
Research interests focus on glaucoma management, global eye health equity, and international capacity-building in ophthalmology. He has worked in over 80 countries, including roles as Medical Director of ORBIS International and Director of the Eye Clinic in St. Lucia. His contributions include advancing surgical training programs and advocating for accessible eye care in low-resource settings.
Professional recognition includes the American Glaucoma Society’s Humanitarian Award (2024) and Yale’s Excellence in Teaching Award. He leads the Glaucoma Research Lab and chairs organizations like the Connecticut Glaucoma Society.
