James M. Tiedje is a University Distinguished Professor and Director of the MSU Center for Microbial Ecology at Michigan State University's Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences. He holds a BS from Iowa State University and MS/PhD from Cornell University in Soil Microbiology and Biochemistry.
His research focuses on microbial ecology, metagenomics, and environmental microbiology, with emphasis on antibiotic resistance genes, soil microbiology, and bioremediation. Notable work includes studies on antibiotic resistance in swine farms, Amazon soil microbial changes due to agriculture, and Shewanella species' ecological preferences.
Publications span topics like microbial community analysis, metagenomic assembly techniques, and agricultural impacts on microbiomes. Awards include election to the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2021) and recognition as a highly cited scientist.
Over 100 graduate students, post-docs, and scholars have worked under him. His lab explores permafrost microbiology, anaerobic processes, and microbial contributions to plant health. He teaches courses on soil biology and microbial ecology.
