Brian Lanoil

Brian Lanoil is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on microbial ecology in extreme environments, particularly icy Arctic systems and permafrost thaw dynamics. He investigates microbial community responses to environmental changes, including climate-driven shifts in permafrost ecosystems and soil health under agricultural practices. Dr. Lanoil employs cutting-edge molecular techniques such as 16S rRNA sequencing and metagenomics to study microbial diversity and function.

He collaborates on projects like the ArcticNet-funded initiative to model Arctic ecosystem impacts and leads courses on microbial ecology, extreme microbiology, and planetary geology.
