Dr. David Pearce is an environmental microbiologist at Northumbria University, focusing on microbial ecology in extreme environments, particularly Polar regions. His research combines molecular techniques to study microbial communities in subglacial lakes, cryoconite holes, and Arctic/Southern Ocean ecosystems. He leads interdisciplinary projects on biogeochemical cycling, planetary protection, and microbial adaptation to environmental change.
Education: PhD in Microbiology (2013), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2015). He supervises multiple postgraduate research students exploring microbial diversity in extreme environments, including subglacial lake microbiology and planetary protection challenges for Mars missions. His work links microbiology with glaciology, chemistry, and physics, addressing global environmental shifts.
Key contributions include pioneering metagenomics approaches for subglacial environments, aerobiology studies over Antarctica, and collaborations with institutions like the British Antarctic Survey and the Lake Ellsworth Consortium. His research highlights microbial roles in cryosphere dynamics and planetary exploration risks.
