James M Valles is a Professor of Physics at Brown University's School of Engineering, holding the Royce Family Professor of Teaching Excellence. His research spans experimental condensed matter physics and biological physics, focusing on superconductivity, electron correlation effects in disordered systems, and magnetic manipulation of biological systems. He has received prestigious awards including the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellowship, Fellow of the American Physical Society, and the Harriet W. Sheridan Award for teaching excellence.

Valles' research in condensed matter physics explores superconductivity, insulating transitions, and quantum phenomena in ultra-thin films and nanostructures. Recent publications highlight studies on metal nanocrystals, quantum critical transport, and magnetic buoyancy effects.
