Dr. James Li is a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, affiliated with the Waisman Center. He leads the Li Lab, which focuses on integrating clinical science, diversity research, quantitative methods, genomics, and neuroscience to study neurodevelopmental and externalizing conditions such as ADHD and autism. His work emphasizes a neurodiversity perspective and seeks to understand how biological, environmental, and social factors interact to influence mental health outcomes across the lifespan.
His research interests include:
- Racial and ethnic disparities in mental health using frameworks like HiTOP
- Gene-brain-environment-cognition interactions in neurodevelopmental conditions
- Measurement invariance and social determinants of health
- Longitudinal modeling and biomarker identification for mental health prediction
Dr. Li is actively involved in the Clinical Psychology graduate program and recruits PhD students with strong statistical backgrounds and passion for clinical psychological science. He values research experience involving thesis projects, data analysis, publication, or grant contribution. While he does not conduct pre-application meetings for fairness, extensive information is available through his lab website.
He emphasizes training clinical scientists who generate knowledge, develop better treatments, and deliver evidence-based care. Applicants are evaluated holistically, with attention to academic excellence, research preparation, motivation, and alignment with the lab’s mission.
Dr. Li’s lab promotes rigorous, interdisciplinary research aimed at personalizing mental health care for children, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds.
