Professor Adam Guastella is the Michael Crouch Chair in Child and Youth Mental Health at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the Brain and Mind Centre and Children's Hospital Westmead Clinical School. His work focuses on collaborative partnerships to improve assessments and treatments for children and families, particularly in neurodevelopmental and mental health domains. He co-leads the Child-Neurodevelopment and Mental Health Team and the child bio-informatics hub, aiming to address complex challenges in neurodevelopmental disorders through multi-disciplinary approaches. He supervises the Autism Clinic for Translational Research and the Anxiety Clinic, providing group-based Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT) programs. His research integrates translational neuroscience, clinical trials, and technology to enhance treatments for conditions like autism and ADHD.
Research interests include autism, ADHD, social anxiety, and oxytocin-based interventions. He has pioneered studies on oxytocin's role in improving social cognition, notably demonstrating its efficacy in treating social impairments in children with autism. Current projects involve digital tools for neurodevelopmental care, AI applications in assessment, and employment support for neurodiverse individuals. He has received awards including the Tracey Goodall Early Career Award and Aubrey Lewis Early Career Award.
Professor Guastella advises students on topics such as CBT for autism, neurodevelopmental diagnostics, and social anxiety. His work is supported by grants from international collaborations (e.g., China, Norway, US) and involves multi-site clinical trials. He is involved in labs focused on translational research, clinical trials, and bioinformatics.
