Professor James Lee holds a dual role as Professor of English Law at King’s College London and Senior Fellow in the Melbourne Law Masters program at the University of Melbourne. He teaches private law subjects at King’s, where he also serves as Acting Associate Dean for Research Impact. His research focuses on private law, law reform, and judicial reasoning in appellate courts, particularly examining how adjudicative structures influence substantive decisions in the UK Supreme Court. He co-edits the Hart Studies on Judging and the Courts book series and is Co-Editor of the bestselling Hanbury and Martin: Modern Equity textbook (23rd ed., 2024).
Professor Lee actively engages with legal institutions, serving as an Academic Bencher of the Inner Temple, Vice-Chair of the Chancery Bar Association’s Academic Liaison Sub-Committee, and Chair of the Property Bar Association’s Law Reform Sub-Committee. He contributes to judicial training through lectures at the Judicial College of England and Wales and serves on the Legal Studies journal’s editorial board.
His career includes visiting roles at institutions such as the University of Edinburgh, UNSW Sydney, Oxford’s All Souls College, and Singapore Management University, alongside visiting professorships in Hong Kong and Portugal. He is also an Independent Governor of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
