James J. Arendt is an Adjunct Professor at San Joaquin College of Law, specializing in civil liability and legal training for law enforcement. A lifelong Fresno resident, he earned a Bachelor's in Political Science from UCLA before joining the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff. His career spanned roles in patrol, SWAT, and dive teams, while concurrently pursuing a legal education at SJCL (Class of 1989). He transitioned to private practice, representing public employees such as law enforcement officers, judges, and city officials in civil rights, wrongful death, and premises liability cases. Notably, his law enforcement background provides unique insight into high-stress legal scenarios, enhancing his representation of first responders.
As an adjunct faculty member, Arendt teaches Standards and Training in Corrections and Peace Officers Standards and Training to supervisors and Field Training Officers. He serves on the Board of the San Joaquin Valley Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, Crimestoppers, and previously led the Association of Defense Counsel of Northern California and Nevada. His legal expertise extends to appellate work in the Ninth Circuit and Fifth District Court of Appeals.
Arendt’s professional affiliations include the Federal Bar Association (past president), American Board of Trial Advocates, and Public Agency Risk Managers Association. His advocacy for public entities and defense of law enforcement personnel has fostered long-term professional relationships and trust in his legal counsel.
