James Hodges is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at The Pennsylvania State University, affiliated with the Eberly College of Science. His research focuses on solid-state chemistry, inorganic materials, and energy-related applications such as thermoelectrics and heterogeneous catalysis. He leads the Hodges Research Group, which develops novel inorganic solids, including microporous oxides, metal chalcogenides, and multi-anion materials. Hodges holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Penn State, a B.S. from Rider University, and postdoctoral experience at Northwestern University and Honeywell UOP as a Senior Scientist.
His group emphasizes synthesis techniques, material characterization, and applications in energy and catalysis. Recent work includes advancements in layered chalcogenides, thermoelectric performance optimization, and antiviral surface treatments for medical materials. Students in the group gain skills applicable to diverse career paths in academia and industry.
Notable lab news includes student awards (e.g., PSU Chemistry Excellence in Graduate Research Award for Ayat) and conference participations. The group collaborates broadly, with publications in high-impact journals like Journal of the American Chemical Society and Chemistry of Materials.
