James Gregory Chappel is the Gilhuly Family Associate Professor of History at Duke University, affiliated with the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He holds additional roles including Director of Undergraduate Studies in History (2023–present) and Co-Director of the Prison Engagement Initiative at the Kenan Institute for Ethics. Chappel’s research focuses on intellectual history of modern Europe and the U.S., emphasizing religion, gender, and family dynamics. His work bridges religious thought, political economy, and human rights. He earned his Ph.D. in History from Columbia University (2012).
Research & Grants: Chappel has secured grants like the National Humanities Center Fellowship (2019) and led projects such as Duke’s Reckoning with Race initiative.
